Volatile Monday: Nifty closes at 18,200; PSU Banks and metals shine, pharma drags

PSU Banks rose yet again amid strong results from Bank of Baroda and SBI.

The start to the week has been strongly volatile as indices swung in both directions but managed to close on a higher note. Nifty jumped 0.47 per cent to close at 18,200 level while Sensex rose 235 points.

SBI and Titan Company merged as the top gainers, ahead of their results. Tech Mahindra, Hindalco and Power Grid Corp were the top losers.

NSE Nifty 50 and BSE Sensex closed lower on the weekly expiry day. Nifty plunged 0.20 per cent while Sensex lost 70 points. Nifty Midcap and Nifty Smallcap rose higher by 0.34 per cent and 0.24 per cent respectively.

Stocks that have hit a fresh 52-week high level include Bharti Airtel, Eicher Motors, M&M, Sun Pharma, Titan Company and Trent.

Investors rejoiced as Nifty finally claimed the much coveted 18000 mark. Sensex also soared above the 60000 level. It was a broad based rally on Monday as all the sectors closed positively.

Talking about the sectoral indices, the majority of the sectors ended in red with Nifty Metal and Pharma losing over a per cent each. On the other hand, Nifty Auto and Energy jumped 1.63 per cent & 1.39 per cent, respectively.

It was carnage on Friday as a severe sell-off in the Indian equity markets took investors by surprise. Nifty tumbled 1.72 per cent to close just above 17,300 while Sensex tanked more than 1,000 points.

Indices traded higher throughout the day as Nifty climbed 1.10 per cent while Sensex gained over 630 points. Nifty Midcap and Nifty Smallcap rose 0.19 per cent & 0.81 per cent, respectively.

Nifty FMCG & Nifty IT gained momentum and closed higher. However, Nifty Metals along with Nifty PSU Bank witnessed severe profit booking.
