Market WRAP: Nifty closed below 17,700; energy, FMCG and private banks drag the market

Indices traded under pressure throughout the day and a sell-off towards the end dragged Nifty below 17,700 level. The benchmark index slipped 0.42 per cent while Sensex plunged 287 points.

Indices saw a magnificent short-covering rally on Friday despite a slight sell-off witnessed in the last hour. Nifty climbed 1.01 per cent to close at 17,200 while Sensex soared 685 points.

On the options front, the 17,300 PE (August 4 Series) option saw maximum addition for the day i.e. nearly 25 lakh shares were added at this strike price, which took the total open interest at this strike above 72 lakh shares. Meanwhile, on the CE side, maximum open interest was seen around 17,500 strike price

IndusInd Bank, Asian Paints & NTPC emerged as the top gainers whereas UPL and Hero MotoCorp were the top losers.

Indices closed flat amid volatility. Nifty hit a high of 17,390 but in the last half an hour, witnessed profit booking. The benchmark index closed higher by 5 points at 17,345 while Sensex gained 20 points.

Carnage on Dalal Street as Nifty closes below 15,400; all sectors end in red

Meanwhile, on the sectoral front, BSE IT index emerged as the top gainer, up by 1.29 per cent while the other sectoral indices are trading lower with BSE Realty index and BSE Oil & Gas index declining up to 1.1 per cent each.

On Monday, despite uncertainty on the developments around Russia-Ukraine talks, the benchmark indices commenced the trading session in green. BSE Sensex gained 300 points to 55,850 level while NSE's Nifty was at 16,681 level, higher by 51 points. India VIX advanced 2.21 per cent, trading at 25.91 in the initial hour of the trading session.
