Should you invest in infrastructure funds now?

In the year 2014, the government came up with the Make in India initiative. This initiative aims to speed up India's progress into the modern world supported by technology. This ended up with big plans like smart cities, repairing the existing infrastructure setups, the introduction of metros in various cities. Plans for building new and repairing old infrastructures are always good news for the infra industry and its complementary sectors such as cement, steel, etc.

Infrastructure is one of those sectors which demands long-term investment horizon as the time horizon of the project itself is way long. So, investment in infrastructure funds must be with the long-term time horizon i.e. 5 years and above. The current fall in the market gives an opportunity to accumulate more. Infrastructure is one of the top sectors that majorly contribute to economic growth.

That said, infrastructure funds do carry a lot of risks. So, it is advisable to first assess your risk profile, have a financial plan in place and then if all your needs have been taken care of and you still have excess money to invest, then only consider investing in infrastructure funds, or any sector or thematic funds for that matter. People who are conservative to moderate in their risk-taking ability should refrain from investing in infrastructure, but if at all they wish to invest then it should form not more than 5 to 10 per cent part of your portfolio.
