Sensex slips more than 100 points; Sun Pharma top Sensex gainer, RIL loses shine
Sensex opened in green only to lose momentum and spend the rest of the trading session in red. Sensex closed at 37,606 levels, down by 129 points or 0.34 per cent while Nifty shut shop at 11,088, down by 13.90 points or 0.13 per cent.
Asian markets traded reflecting mixed sentiments with Nikkie sliding by more than 2 per cent and Shanghai trading up by close to 0.70 per cent. Kospi and Hang Seng traded in negative territory and were down by 0.78 per cent and 0.41 per cent respectively. European equities traded higher on the last day of the week, ahead of the Eurozone GDP number with Nokia catching global investors' attention by gaining over 10 per cent. FTSE was up by 0.19 per cent; DAX, the biggest gainer in European indices, was up by 0.70 per cent while CAC 40 added 0.33 per cent to its previous close.
The earnings were mixed in today's session with IOC missing the estimates and SBI beating the street estimates. SBI gave a positive surprise with its Q1 results by declaring a whopping 81 per cent jump in profits (YoY) to Rs 4,189.34 crore. The NIIs, profits and NPAs beat street's expectation leading to bullishness in the stock. SBI shares fell by 9 per cent in June quarter while plunging 44 per cent on an YTD basis due to the concerns over asset quality. SBI was up by 2.41 per cent in today's trading session.
Gold and silver continued their forward march with gold clocking more than one per cent gains and silver gaining by more than three per cent.
The biggest Sensex winners were Sun Pharma increasing by 5.46 per cent, SBI up by 2.41 per cent, M&M gaining by over 2 per cent while HCL Tech and Axis Bank increased by more than 1 per cent each. Eicher Motors was the biggest loser, slipping by 2.74 per cent followed by RIL which was down by 1.98 per cent. HDFC bank continued its losing streak by slipping 1.70 per cent while Asian Paints was down by 1.60 per cent and HDFC fell by 1.59 per cent.
Broader markets were seen outperforming Sensex in today's trading session with BSE mid-cap index gaining by 0.36 per cent even as BSE small-cap index was up by 0.82 per cent.
Torrent Pharma, Ajantha Pharma, Godrej Properties, Alkem Lab and Balkrishna Industries pushed the mid-cap index in green with Torrent Pharma being the top gainer adding more than 9 per cent to yesterday's close. Laurus Lab, Solara Active Pharma Sciences, Essel Pro, Neuland Labs and Deepak Fertilisers were the biggest gainers in percentage terms, contributing to the BSE small-cap index. Ipca Laboratories was the biggest contributor to the small-cap index gains followed by Laurus Labs.
Amongst the BSE sectoral indices, BSE healthcare was the best performing index gaining more than 3 per cent. BSE Metal and BSE Realty indices outperformed in today session by gaining 0.79 per cent and 1.27 per cent respectively. BSE Oil & Gas was the biggest loser, slipping by 0.76 per cent while BSE Bankex disappointed yet again falling by 0.11 per cent.
