Sensex, Nifty touch record highs; IRCTC jumps 7 per cent, Natco Pharma gains 6 per cent, Adani Green tumbles

On Monday, the domestic benchmark indices remained volatile. Sensex closed at 45,426.97 levels, up by 0.77 per cent or 347.42 points. Nifty gained by 97.20 points or 0.73 per cent to settle at 13,355.75 levels, close to its record high of 13,366.65 levels.

Gains in financial and FMCG stocks boosted positive trends in the markets.

In today’s session, the market breadth remained tilted more in the favour of bulls during the last hour of the trading session.

The shares of Tata Chemicals gained around 3.64 per cent after its promoter, Tata Sons hiked a stake in the company again.

On the global front, Asian indices such as Shanghai index, Hang Seng and Nikkei fell by 0.81 per cent, 1.23 per cent and 0.76 per cent, respectively, as rising tensions amid the US and China increased investors’ cautiousness. Meanwhile, KOSPI gained 0.51 per cent.

In the European markets, FTSE 100 was trading in the green, up by 0.34 per cent while DAX and CAC 40 were down by 0.50 per cent and 0.91 per cent, respectively.

Sensex gainers consisted of Bharti Airtel that jumped 3.05 per cent, HUL surged 2.95 per cent, HDFC rose by 2.54 per cent, ITC gained by 2.50 per cent, IndusInd Bank increased by 2.41 per cent, SBI strengthened by 2.37 per cent, Sun Pharmaceutical Industries rose by 2.36 per cent, ONGC gained by 2.34 per cent, etc.

Sensex losers included Kotak Mahindra Bank that declined by 1.37 per cent, Nestle plunged 1.36 per cent, Tata Steel went down by 1.31 per cent, Bajaj Finance decreased by 1.02 per cent, HDFC Bank fell by 0.94 per cent, Maruti Suzuki weakened by 0.79 per cent, etc.

Amongst sectoral indices on BSE, the Telecom index was the biggest gainer, up by 2.78 per cent while Consumer Durables index was the biggest loser, down by 0.45 per cent. BSE Healthcare index gained by 1.57 per cent and BSE FMCG was up by 1.60 per cent.

BSE Small-Cap index and BSE Mid-Cap index remained in the highlight during today’s session as well, outperforming the domestic indices. BSE Small-Cap index gained by 1.30 per cent and BSE Mid-Cap index rose by 0.95 per cent.
