The equity benchmark indices closed today’s volatile session with marginal losses of nearly half a per cent each on Wednesday. Sensex ended the session at 29,893.96 down by 173 points (0.58 per cent) and Nifty closed at 8,748.75 down by 43.45 points (0.49 per cent).

On intraday basis, Sensex saw a swing of 1,600 points and Nifty swung between 500 points. The benchmark indices traded higher in the initial half of the day but reacting to the weak global sentiment market, they gave up all the gains in the second half of the session. On the contrary, broader indices, ended the session with gains. BSE Mid-cap and Small-cap indices closed higher by 1.9 per cent and 1.86 per cent on intra-day basis. Pharma stocks traded with a strong momentum. Cadila Heathcare, Divis Labs, Cipla, Dr Reddy’s, all traded with strong gains of 13 per cent to 3 per cent. At the broader level, Cholamandalam Finance topped the gainers’ list with as high as 16 per cent.
