Sensex gains by more than 200 points; IRCTC jumps by nearly 4 per cent; Trent slumps by more than 4 per cent
The Sensex closed today at 38407.01 by gaining 224.93 points or by 0.59 per cent whereas the Nifty registered 52.35 points or 0.46 per cent to settle at 11322.50. The metal, banking stock and pharma stock did well in today’s buying session.
Coming to global markets, the investors resumed trading in the Japanese markets after a long week-end and as a result Nikkei gained by 1.88 per cent. However, the rising US-China tensions over the latter imposing sanctions on 11 Americans in a retaliatory move, affected the Shanghai index, which fell by 1.15 per cent. The mood of the investors remains cautious. Hang Seng gained by 2.11 while KOSPI rose by 1.35 per cent.
The European markets opened in green with FTSE 100, DAX and CAC 40 trading higher by 2.37 per cent, 2.63 per cent and 2.62 per cent respectively.
With the rebound demand in Asia as economies slowly re-open and USA’s boost to the oil industry, a rise in Crude prices has been seen.
The Sensex gainers today consisted of banking companies. The Axis Bank registered 3.96 per cent, IndusInd Bank rose by 2.45 per cent, HDFC Bank gained by 1.58 per cent, HDFC rose by 1.48 per cent and ICICI Bank increased by 1.05 per cent, etc. Other companies like ITC and Tata Steel also increased by 2.39 per cent and 1.54 per cent respectively.
The shares of Titan Company declined by 3.73 per cent as did Bharti Airtel’s by 1.27 per cent. Other Sensex losers include that of HCL Technologies, which declined by 1.26 per cent, Tech Mahindra’s by 0.95 per cent, ONGC also fell by 0.70 per cent, Sun Pharmaceutical Industries declined by 0.33 per cent and Infosys fell by 0.30 per cent, etc.
The Bankex was the biggest gainer up by 1.41 per cent amongst the sectoral indices on the BSE, whereas the telecom index was the biggest loser by 1.46 per cent. In broader markets, BSE Small-Cap index declined by 0.23 per cent and the BSE Mid-Cap index fell by 0.20 per cent.
