Sensex down by 1 per cent; Airtel, Tata Motors top losers

Markets inched lower on Thursday taking cues from global markets. Sensex was down by 1.01 per cent closing at 33,690.09, with only six index stocks managing to close in the green.

Bharti Airtel was down by 6.60 per cent closing at Rs. 295.85 per share, while Vedanta closed at Rs 204.50 per share, down by 3.47 per cent. Tata Motors slipped by 3.02 per cent and managed to close at Rs. 165.40 per share.

Wipro, Coal India and Kotak Mahindra Bank were the only Sensex constituents that closed higher by more than 1 per cent. Wipro gained 3.30 per cent, Coal India was up by 1.66 per cent and Kotak Mahindra climbed by 1.41 per cent on Thursday. Only six Sensex stocks managed to close in green showcasing the weakness in the markets.

Markets reacted to the fears of rising interest rates emanating from expected strong economic data (employment data) in the US. Also, the fear of bomb being sent to Obama and Hillary Clinton spooked the US markets. Unstable geopolitical situation and political uncertainty in Italy kept European markets worried and volatile. Crude oil was seen taking a breather in today's market while the Indian Rupee was stable against the US dollar.
