The global markets traded mixed in the past couple of weeks with the German indices outperforming the other major global indices. The German DAX gained 2.99 per cent, Dow Jones Industrial Average slipped 0.37 per cent while S&P 500 managed to close flat in the past two weeks. Nasdaq gained the most amongst the US indices and managed to close higher by 2.60 per cent, thus indicating outperformance of IT stocks. The European  markets outperformed the global peers with FTSE closing higher by 2.27 per cent even as CAC 40 gained 1.71 per cent. Among Asian markets, Shanghai was the best performer along with Nikkie. Shanghai gained 2.24 per cent, while Nikkie was up by 1.72 per cent.

Sensex is on a roll, cheering the good earnings performance of corporate India, even as rising crude oil prices and weakening INR against the USD attempt their best to spoil the party. The combination of crude oil price rise and weakening INR can be sentimentally negative for the markets. However, I believe the crude oil prices have peaked out and the RBI may soon intervene to support INR against the USD by selling dollars in the market.

ICICI Bank jumps despite negative numbers

ICICI Bank, one of India's largest private sector banks, posted Q4FY18 and full year results on Monday. The NII for the quarter rose by 1 per cent in Q4FY18 vs Rs. 5,962 crore in Q4FY17. This minimal growth was largely due to higher interest expenses, which increased by 8 per cent yoy. The interest income for the quarter rose by 5.1 per cent yoy.
