Markets notch up impressive gains

The Indian benchmark indices BSE Sensex and NSE Nifty ended in the green at the close of today’s market hours. The Sensex closed at 37,393.48, up 0.75 per cent or 278.60 points, while Nifty closed at 11,257.10, up 0.90 per cent or 100.10 points.

The Sensex closed higher today as compared to the previous day’s closing level of 37,114.88. The S&P BSE Midcap index was up 0.27 per cent or 37.46 points at 14,154.88. Meanwhile, the S&P BSE Smallcap index closed 34.99 points higher or up 0.25 per cent at 13,816.72.

The top four stocks that drove the performance of the Sensex include Bajaj Finance (up 3.64 per cent), Tata Motors (up 3.48 per cent), Infosys (up 2.47 per cent) and Vedanta (up 2.22 per cent). The stock that emerged as the bottom performer in the Sensex was Yes Bank, which was down 4.07 per cent. Other stocks that closed in the red include Sterling Tools, down 8.78 per cent, Zee Learn (down 7.17 per cent), Waterbase (down 6.71 per cent) and VIP Clothing (down 6.56 per cent).

The sector that performed the best in the Sensex was Cement & Construction, up 2.14 per cent. Meanwhile, today’s bottom performing sector in the Sensex was the Services sector, which was down by 2.24 per cent.

With regards to indices, the S&P BSE Enhanced Value index performed the best, posting a growth of 2.09 per cent. It was closely followed by the Oil & Gas index (up 1.53 per cent) and Basic Materials index (up 1.52 per cent). Contrarily, the Telecom sector was the worst performer, down 1.15 per cent. Other indices that traded in the red include the IPO index (down 0.72 per cent), SME IPO (down 0.60 per cent), Healthcare (down 0.13 per cent) and FMCG (down 0.02 per cent). The rest of the indices ended the day on a positive note.

Meanwhile, the top gainers in Nifty included Zee Entertainment Enterprises (up 9.11 per cent) and Bharat Petroleum Corporation (up 4.85 per cent). On the other hand, the top losers in Nifty included Yes Bank (down 3.32 per cent) and Bharti Airtel (down 2.26 per cent).
