L&T and Mitsubishi commissions hot strip mill at SAIL Rourkela

Larsen & Toubro Limited’s Metallurgical & Material Handling (MMH) business and Mitsubishi Corporation has jointly announced the commissioning of state-of-the-art, three million tonnes per annum capacity, hot strip mill at SAIL Rourkela on January 31, 2020. It has been built with the technology from Primetals Technologies and Hitachi Japan.

The new hot strip mill-2 at SAIL's Rourkela (Odisha) steel plant rolled out its first HR Coil within two days of the commencement of hot trials. The mill will roll out Carbon Structural Steel, HSLA, High Carbon Steel, LPG Cylinder Steel, Low Alloy Steel, API (up to X100) Pipe Steel and Auto-grade steel, to cater to the high-end market segments.

The mill is the largest of its kind in India. It will produce coils with a thickness of 1.2 to 25.4 mm and width between 725 to 2150 mm with a coil weight of up to 35 tonnes. It is equipped with a shearing line to produce custom cut HR Sheets and support infrastructure of 16.5 km, 220 KV power transmission line, a GIS switchyard, and intake well 3 km-long twin pipeline to convey water to the plant. The world class HR coils produced from this mill will boost SAIL's market share, going forward.

On Wednesday, the stock of L&T surged by 2.6 per cent to Rs 1,325 from the previous close of Rs 1,291.60 on BSE.
