Closing bell: Markets fell on fourth consecutive day after RBI increased the repo rate

BSE Sensex fell by 214 points to close at 54,892 levels.

Despite the market weakness, the realty, healthcare, IT, auto, metal, and realty indices gained. The increased repo rate had less impact on the banking stocks. The FMCG, telecom, oil & gas, and energy equities all witnessed selling pressure. The rupee reaches a low of Rs 77.73 against the dollar.  

  

BSE Sensex fell by 214 points to close at 54,892 levels. BSE Midcap index dropped 33 points to end the day at 22,530 levels. BSE Smallcap index too plunged 87 points to close at 25,978 levels. The Top Gainers of Sensex today were Tata Steel, State Bank of India, Bajaj Finance, TCS, and Titan. However, the Top Losers included Reliance Industries, ITC, Axis Bank, Induslnd Bank, and Asian Paints.     

    

Nifty 50 also ended in the red territory at 16,356 levels, falling by 60 points. Similarly, Bank Nifty sank 49 points to close the day at 34,946 levels. The top gainers on the index were Tata Steel, State Bank of India, Titan, Dr Reddy’s Laboratories, and BPCL. The top losers were Bharti Airtel, ITC, Reliance Industries, UPL, and Asian Paints.  

    

The total stocks traded today were 3,433, out of which, 1,552 advanced and 1,771 stocks declined. There were 110 stocks that were unchanged. The number of stocks that were locked in the upper circuit was 217 while 166 stocks hit their lower circuits today. The number of stocks that hit a new 52-week high is 66 while 73 stocks made a fresh 52-week low today.
