Closing Bell: Indices end with big gains; PSU banks excel

BSE Sensex closed near the day high, climbing 503 points to close at 54,252 levels.

Following a turbulent session on Thursday, the major equity indices concluded the day with big gains. Banks, metals, and financials rose but FMCG stocks fell. NSE's monthly F&O contracts expired today, causing trading to be turbulent. InterGlobe Aviation's stock (Indigo Airline) increased by 10.51 per cent. The stock of ITI rocketed by 18.55 per cent. The company's consolidated net profit rose by 78.33 per cent. Also, the shares of Torrent Pharmaceuticals' soared 10.16 per cent.  

 

BSE Sensex closed near the day high, climbing 503 points to close at 54,252 levels. BSE Midcap index too jumped 314 points to end the day at 22,143 levels. Likewise, BSE Smallcap scaled 194 points to close at 25,318 levels. The top gaining stocks on BSE Sensex today were HDFC Bank, Axis Bank, ICICI Bank, Nestle India, and Tata Steel. However, the Top Losers were Sun Pharmaceutical, Reliance Industries, Larsen & Toubro, Hindustan Unilever, and Dr Reddy’s Laboratories.   

  

Nifty 50 ended in green at 16,170 levels with a gain of 144 points. Similarly, Bank Nifty shot up by 755 points and closed the day at 35,094 levels. The top gaining stocks were Tata Steel, Apollo Hospitals, JSW Steel, State Bank of India, and HDFC Bank. The top losers today were UPL, Divi’s Laboratories, Sun Pharmaceutical, Reliance Industries, and ONGC.  

  

The total stocks traded today were 3,429, out of which, 1,779 advanced and 1,520 stocks declined. There were 130 stocks that were unchanged. The number of stocks that were locked in the upper circuit was 179 while 285 stocks closed in the lower circuit today. The number of stocks that have made a new 52-week high is 49 and there were 246 stocks that made a fresh 52-week low today.
