Bloodbath on D-street: Sensex crashes 1,448 points

Equity market witnessed a bloodbath on D-street and Sensex crashed more than 1,448 points by the end of the trading session as the domestic markets suffered huge losses with the benchmark indices hitting their lowest levels recorded since mid-October.

Investors fear that Coronavirus would soon be listed as a pandemic, which would have far-reaching consequences on the world economy and may cause a recession in the major economies. As a result of this, domestic markets tumbled on Friday after fresh cases of Coronavirus was detected in more than ten countries in the past 24 hours, including South Korea, Nigeria, Africa, etc. Data shows that more than 83,000 people have been affected globally so far.

Sensex closed at 38,297.29 in today's trading session, down by 3.64 per cent while, Nifty closed at 11,219.20, down by 3.56 per cent. 48 stocks on out of 50 stocks in Nifty closed in red today. Besides, around 100 stocks had already hit their lower circuit in the first half of the trading session while over 200 stocks hit their fresh 52-week low for the day.

The major losers of S&P BSE Sensex are: TechM-down by 8.14 per cent, Tata Steel-down by 7.57 per cent, M&M-down by 7.50 per cent, HCL Tech-down by 6.25 per cent and Bajaj Finance-down by 6.24 per cent

S&P BSE Mid-cap closed at 14,600.02, down by 3.13 per cent and S&P BSE Small-cap closed at 13,709.01, down by 3.52 per cent in today's trade. Top three losing small-stocks are: Bliss GVS Pharma-down by 19.98 per cent, Future Consumer-down by 19.81 per cent and Indoco Remedies-down by 14.87 per cent.

The top three losing sectoral indices are: S&P BSE Metal-down by 7.01 per cent, S&P BSE Information Technology-down by 5.61 per cent and S&P BSE Teck-down by 5.07 per cent.
