BHEL commissions thermal power station in Odisha

Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL) has successfully commissioned the 1320 MW IB Thermal Power Station (2x660MW).

Located in Jharsuguda district of Odisha, the project is owned by Odisha Power Generation Corporation Limited (OPGC), a joint venture company of the Government of Odisha and AES, a US-based energy company. Previously, BHEL had set up two units of 210 MW at IB Thermal Power Station which are in operation for more than 20 years.

BHEL's scope of work in the project includes design, engineering, manufacturing, supply, erection and commissioning of steam turbines, Generators, Boiler, associated auxiliaries and electricals, besides state-of-the-art Controls & Instrumentation (C&I) and Electrostatic precipitators (ESPs).

The key equipment for the project has been manufactured by BHEL at its Haridwar, Trichy, Hyderabad, Ranipet, Bhopal and Bengaluru works, while the construction of the plant was undertaken by the company's Power Sector - Eastern Region, Kolkata.

BHEL has been a committed partner in the development of the state of Odisha, with BHEL supplied sets contributing 100 per cent of the coal-based power stations installed by OPGC. A substantial portion of power generated from the project will be supplied to the Grid Corporation of Odisha (GRIDCO).

BHEL is India's largest manufacturer of power generation equipment with an installed base of over 1,85,000 MW of power plant equipment globally. The company has contracted 58 sets of supercritical boilers and 51 sets of supercritical turbine generators ordered on it by various customers, in domestic as well as overseas markets.

On Wednesday, stock of BHEL opened at Rs. 50.15. During the day, it was up by 4.3 per cent making an intraday high of Rs. 52.35 on BSE.
