Benchmarks break the nine-day losing streak to close in the green

The Indian benchmark indices BSE Sensex and NSE Nifty emerged in the green today after bleeding red for straight nine sessions. The Sensex closed at 37318.53, up by 227.71 points, while Nifty closed at 11,222.05, up by 73.85 points.

At 14.41 hours, BSE Sensex was up by 481.88 points, touching intra-day level of 37572.70. The BSE Midcap index was up by 0.62%, while the BSE Smallcap index was up by 0.30%.

The stocks driving the indices were Sun Pharma, Bharti Airtel, Vedanta, IndusInd Bank and Reliance Industries.

Sun Pharma which was down by 20% on Monday, recovered by 5.87% today. It topped the gainers list and drove the BSE Sensex index. Bharti Airtel, Vedanta, IndusInd Bank and Reliance Industries were up by 5.4%, 4.08%, 2.58% and 2.33% respectively. Bharti Airtel jumped when the company announced its plan of launching new prepaid pack of Rs 249 and phase out post-paid plans below Rs 499.

All other major indices traded in the green, except the Information Technology index, which was down by 1.23%. Telecom, Energy and Capital goods indices were up by 2.81%, 1.66% and 1.46% during the day.

The Nifty PSU bank index was up 2.85%, driven by Union Bank, PNB, Allahabad Bank and Bank of Baroda, which surged by 4.9%, 4.6%, 4.57% and 4.54% respectively.
