159 MW Boost: Leading Power Player Expands Wind Capacity Before Demand Surge!
New Wind Power Addition Prepares for Increased Peak Demand
JSW Energy Limited has added 159 MW of greenfield wind power capacity in the current quarter, increasing its total operational capacity to 8,400 MW. This addition comes just before the wind season and is expected to help meet the growing energy demand during the peak season.
Wind Power Capacity
With this new addition, JSW Energy’s total operational wind capacity now stands at 2,826 MW. The company has been focused on expanding its renewable energy portfolio and currently has around 8.0 GW of capacity under construction.
Future Capacity Targets
JSW Energy aims to achieve a total installed generation capacity of 20 GW well before FY2030. This target aligns with the company's broader strategy to enhance its renewable energy footprint and contribute to a sustainable power supply.
Power Sector Overview
The Indian power sector is increasingly focused on energy security and meeting both base load and peak load demands. The industry is also seeing a push for low-cost energy storage solutions to integrate intermittent renewable energy sources effectively.
Market Performance and Growth
Power demand in India grew by 4.5% in the first nine months of FY25, with a moderation to 2.7% in Q3 due to a high base effect. The peak power demand reached 224 GW in December 2024, up from 220 GW in December 2023. The country’s total installed capacity is now 462 GW, with a significant share from renewable sources.
Acquisitions and Expansions
JSW Energy has been actively involved in acquisitions to strengthen its portfolio. The company acquired O2 Power, adding 4,696 MW of capacity, and a 125 MW wind project from Hetero Labs. The acquisition of KSK Mahanadi Power Company, a 3,600 MW thermal power plant, is also in progress.
Conclusion
The addition of 159 MW of wind power capacity is a strategic move by JSW Energy to support its growth plans and meet increasing power demand. The company’s focus on renewable energy and strategic acquisitions positions it well for future growth and stability in the power sector.
