What are the different types of equity-oriented mutual funds?

Mutual funds offer various types of open-ended as well as closed-ended schemes. These are known as one of the tax-efficient investment instruments, which offers diversification and as well as flexibility to their investors. As per the Association of Mutual Funds of India (AMFI), currently, as of September 2021, there are 1,441 schemes. There are five core schemes of mutual funds such as equity-oriented, debt-oriented, hybrid, solution-oriented and other schemes. These schemes are further divided into various sub-categories. 

Let’s take a look at equity-oriented mutual fund schemes in detail:

Best Performing funds within the category based on 1 year return (Direct Plan) 

1.      Large-cap Funds 

These funds are open-ended equity scheme which chiefly invest in large-cap stocks. Minimum investment in equity and equity-related instrument should be at least of 80% of its total assets. 

Nippon India Large Cap Fund = 73.63% 

Franklin India Bluechip Fund = 68.83% 

HDFC Top 100 Fund = 65.71% 

2.      Large & Mid-Cap Fund 

These funds are open-ended equity scheme which chiefly invest in large & mid cap companies. Minimum investment in equity and equity-related instrument should be at least 35% of total assets in large-cap funds as well as mid-cap funds each. 

ICICI Prudential Large & Mid Cap Fund = 86.30% 

HDFC Large and Mid-Cap Fund = 83.78% 

UTI Core Equity Fund = 80.51% 

 

 

3.      Mid-Cap Fund 

These funds are open-ended equity scheme which chiefly invest in mid-cap companies. Minimum investment in equity and equity-related instrument should be at least 65% of its total assets. 

PGIM India Midcap Opportunities Fund = 99.88% 

Quant Mid Cap Fund = 94.71% 

Mirae Asset Midcap Fund = 90.99% 

4.      Small-cap funds  

These funds are open-ended schemes which chiefly invest in small-cap companies. Minimum investment in equity and equity-related instrument should be at least 65% of its total assets. 

Kotak Small Cap Fund = 114.47% 

L&T Emerging Businesses Fund = 111.68% 

Nippon India Small Cap Fund = 109.17% 

5.      Multi-Cap Fund 

Multi-cap funds are an open-ended scheme which invest across large cap, mid cap and small cap companies. Minimum investment in equity and equity related instrument should at least 65% of total assets. Multi cap funds should have a portfolio of not less than 25% in large cap, mid cap, and small cap companies respectively. 

Quant Active Fund = 97.17% 

Edelweiss Recently Listed IPO Fund = 92.10% 

Nippon India Multicap Fund = 89.59% 

6.      Flexi-Cap Fund 

Flexi-cap funds are open-ended scheme which invest across large-cap, mid-cap and small cap companies. Minimum investment in equity and equity related instrument should at least 65% of total assets. Flexi-cap funds does not have any restrictions like multi-cap funds. These funds can invest across market capitalization without any restrictions and limits.  

PGIM India Flexi Cap Fund = 71.55% 

UTI Flexi Cap Fund = 67.25%

DSP Flexi Cap Fund = 64.11% 

7.      Dividend Yield Fund 

These funds are equity-oriented scheme which chiefly invest in dividend yielding stocks. Minimum investment in equity should be at least 65% of total assets 

ICICI Prudential Dividend Yield Equity Fund = 89.98% 

Templeton India Equity Income Fund = 77.03% 

UTI Dividend Yield Fund = 66.27% 

8.       Value Fund 

These funds are equity-oriented schemes which chiefly follows the value investment strategy. Minimum investment in equity and equity related instrument should be at least 65% of total assets. 

IDFC Sterling Value Fund = 102.31% 

Templeton India Value Fund = 94.06% 

Nippon India Value Fund = 77.27% 

9.      Contra Fund 

These funds are equity-oriented scheme which chiefly follow contrarian investment strategy. Minimum investment in equity and equity-related instruments should be at least 65% of total assets. 

SBI Contra Fund = 91.46% 

Kotak India EQ Contra Fund = 60.84%  

Invesco India Contra Fund = 60.55% 

10.  Focused Fund 

These funds are equity-oriented scheme which invest in maximum 30 stocks (where the scheme intends to focus viz. multi-cap, large-cap, mid-cap, small-cap). Minimum investment in equity and equity-related instruments should be at least 65% of total assets.  

Franklin India Focused Equity Fund = 84.14% 

Nippon India Focused Equity Fund = 81.56% 

HDFC Focused 30 Fund = 76.21% 

11.  Sectoral/Thematic Fund 

These funds are open-ended schemes which invest in a particular sector or theme. Minimum investment in equity and equity related instrument of a particular sector should be at least 80% of its total assets. 

Following are best performing out of all sectoral/thematic funds based on one year return: 

ICICI Prudential Commodities Fund = 144.58%  

ICICI Prudential Infrastructure Fund = 114.64% 

IDFC Infrastructure Fund = 110.87% 

12.  ELSS (Equity Linked Savings Scheme) 

These funds are open-ended schemes which invest in equity related instrument with a statutory Lock in period of 3 years and offers tax benefit. Minimum investment in equity and equity-related instrument should be of at least 80% of its total assets. 

Quant Tax Plan = 102.43% 

IDFC Tax Advantage (ELSS) Fund = 85.99% 

Franklin India Taxshield Fund = 76.81%
