Indices witnessed a fantastic short-covering rally in the last hour while Nifty closed 0.69 per cent higher. It closed above 16,000 mark while Sensex gained about 340 points.

The equity markets cheered as benchmark indices broke the four-day losing streak supported by strength in oil & gas, financial, IT and pharma shares. However, weakness in metal shares capped the upside gains. Sensex ended 427.79 points higher at 55,320.28 level while Nifty zoomed 121.85 points to end at 16,478.10 level.

The markets reacted positively to the Budget wherein, Sensex surged up to almost 974 points, marking the day’s high and is now at 58,159.13, up by 144.96 or 0.27 per cent higher than the last trading session.
