The Employees’ Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) has once again extended the deadline for activating the Universal Account Number (UAN) and linking Aadhaar with bank accounts under the Employment Linked Incentive (ELI) scheme. The new deadline is now February 15.
Originally set for November 30, the deadline has been postponed multiple times. It was first moved to December 15, then further extended to January 15, and has now been pushed back once again.
Why is UAN Activation Important?
The Universal Account Number (UAN) is a 12-digit unique ID that helps individuals manage their Employees’ Provident Fund (EPF) accounts. It acts as a central tool to track and access EPF funds.
Activating your UAN is necessary to use various online services provided by EPFO, such as:
Withdrawing EPF funds online
Checking your EPF balance
Updating contact details
Additionally, linking Aadhaar to your UAN is crucial for seamless fund transfers directly into your bank account. In simple terms, UAN activation and Aadhaar linking are required to access EPFO's online services, including direct benefit transfers (DBT).
What is the ELI Scheme?
The Employment Linked Incentive (ELI) scheme is a government initiative aimed at generating two crore jobs in the next two years, focusing on boosting employment in India's formal sector.
As part of PM Modi’s job creation and skill development initiatives, the Union Budget 2024 introduced three schemes under the ELI program, with a total allocation of Rs 2 crore. These schemes are expected to benefit over four crore young individuals.
According to a recent notification from the Ministry of Labour and Employment, all eligible employees must activate their UAN and link Aadhaar to avail the benefits under this scheme.
