In a landmark moment for Indian railways, the Hon’ble Union Minister for Railways, Shri Ashwini Vaishnaw, inaugurated India’s first Vande Bharat Sleeper trainset at BEML's Bangalore rail complex. This groundbreaking achievement marks a significant milestone for BEML, a leading manufacturer of rail and metro systems in India, which has indigenously designed and manufactured the trainset at its facility. During the event, Shri Vaishnaw also laid the foundation stone for a new Hangar facility spanning 9.2 acres, dedicated to the export of standard and broad-gauge rolling stock. This new facility aims to enhance BEML’s export capabilities, expanding its global footprint in rail transportation.
The inauguration was attended by notable dignitaries, including Shri V. Somanna, Minister of State for Railways; Shri Satish Kumar, Chairman & CEO of the Railway Board; and Shri Shantanu Roy, Chairman & Managing Director of BEML. Senior officials from Indian Railways and the Integral Coach Factory (ICF) also graced the occasion, reflecting the significance of this project for India's railway sector. The Vande Bharat Sleeper trainset, a first-of-its-kind in the country, has been meticulously designed by BEML, featuring austenitic stainless-steel construction with advanced crashworthy elements such as specially designed crash buffers and couplers to ensure maximum passenger safety. All materials and components meet the stringent EN45545 HL3 grade fire safety standards.
With world-class facilities and superior interiors, the Vande Bharat Sleeper trainset is poised to revolutionize long-distance rail travel in India. BEML’s design seamlessly integrates aesthetic appeal with functional excellence, bringing a passenger experience on par with European standards. Features include ergonomic seating, spacious sleeper berths, modular pantries and specially designed berths and toilets for differently-abled passengers. The 1st AC coach is equipped with modern amenities such as showers with hot water, enhancing passenger comfort during long journeys. This project underscores BEML’s dedication to innovation and excellence, setting new benchmarks in Indian rail transportation.
Engineered with precision and attention to detail, the trainset boasts numerous modern features aimed at improving passenger experience and safety. Highlights include automatic exterior passenger doors, sensor-based inter-communication doors and remotely operated fire barrier doors at the end walls. The trainset's design prioritizes both functionality and passenger comfort, incorporating elements like an integrated reading light with USB charging provision, public announcement and visual information systems, and inside display panels. BEML has led the integration of critical systems such as electrical, propulsion, bogies, exterior plug doors, brake systems and HVAC, ensuring optimal performance and seamless operation.
The Vande Bharat Sleeper trainset is expected to transform long-distance travel in India, offering a blend of comfort, safety and efficiency at speeds of up to 160 kmph during service and 180 kmph during testing. With a passenger capacity of 823 across 16 coaches, the train features various berth types, including AC 3 Tier, AC 2 Tier and First-Class AC berths. This project is a testament to BEML’s commitment to advancing India’s rail capabilities, showcasing the company’s expertise in designing and manufacturing world-class trainsets that meet international standards.
