The Sensex closed 43 points or 0.05 per cent higher at 78,016, while the Nifty 50 closed 10 points or 0.04 per cent higher at 23,668, as the gains in Nifty heavyweight HDFC Bank and IT stocks were offset by ICICI Bank and energy stocks. The Nifty Bank closed 97 points lower and settled at 51,607, giving up on a day's winning streak.

On the NSE benchmark index, Nifty 50 recorded a 33.82 crore volume, whereas the last 20-day average volume stands at 32.3 crore.
