On Wednesday, the headline equity indices, Sensex and Nifty ended slightly lower after a positive opening in the morning session of the trade.

The European markets were also trading in the green at the time of opening today. The inflation in the UK has reached 9 per cent, which is the highest ever in 40 years as the food & energy prices skyrocketed in the month of April.  

At the time of market closing, BSE Sensex was at 54,208.53, down by 109.94 points or 0.20 per cent. BSE Midcap index also ended at 22,672.16, down by 28.71 points or 0.13 per cent.  BSE Smallcap index closed at 26,404.78 levels, higher by 0.33 per cent or 86.70 points.  

The Top Gainers on BSE Sensex today were Hindustan Unilever, UltraTech Cement, Asian Paints, Sun Pharmaceutical, and ITC. On the other hand, the stocks such as Power Grid Corporation of India, BCPL, Tech Mahindra, Tata Motors, and SBI turned out to be the Top Losers.    

On the other hand, Nifty 50 fell by 19 points or 0.12 per cent and closed at the 16,240.30 level. Likewise, Nifty Midcap 100 and Nifty Smallcap 100 were also down by 0.22 per cent & 0.39 per cent, respectively whereas, Bank Nifty was down by 0.40 per cent and was at the 34,163.70 level. 

The top gainers on Nifty 50 were Tata Consumer Products, Shree Cement, Hindustan Unilever, UltraTech Cement, and Cipla. The stocks losing the most were Power Grid Corporation of India, BPCL, Tech Mahindra, Tata Motors, and Apollo Hospitals.  

The total stocks traded on BSE today were 3,466, out of which, 1,910 advanced while 1,440 stocks declined. There were 116 stocks that were unchanged. The number of stocks that were locked in the upper circuit was 13 while seven stocks closed in the lower circuit today. Around 59 stocks touched a fresh 52-week high while 34 stocks hit a new 52-week low today.  

All the sectors ended in the red wherein, realty, PSE, and PSU banks dragged the indices. On the other hand, FMCG, pharma, and healthcare sectors ended on the higher side.
