Baroda BNP Paribas Mutual Fund launches a thematic equity scheme - Baroda BNP Paribas Energy Opportunities Fund

Baroda BNP Paribas Energy Opportunities Fund aims to capitalise on India's expanding energy sector amid a transition to a developed economy.

Baroda BNP Paribas Mutual Fund has announced the launch of its Baroda BNP Paribas Energy Opportunities Fund, a thematic equity scheme designed to capitalise on the immense growth potential of India's energy sector.

The New Fund Offer (NFO) will be open for subscription from January 21, 2025, to February 4, 2025.

This fund provides investors with a unique opportunity to ride India's energy transition wave as the nation's energy demands rise in line with its GDP growth.

Energy: The Cornerstone of Growth
The fund taps into the historical correlation between economic development and energy consumption. Countries transitioning from developing to developed economies experience a surge in energy demands, and India is poised to follow a similar trajectory.

Between 2003 and 2023, China's per capita energy consumption rose from 1.5 MWh to 6.6 MWh, powered by rapid GDP growth. Similarly, India’s energy consumption is expected to grow 1.7x over the next five years, driven by increasing demand across households, agriculture, industry, and infrastructure.

Management Comments

  • Suresh Soni, CEO, Baroda BNP Paribas AMC, emphasized the fund's alignment with India's energy-driven growth story: "India’s GDP is projected to grow by 1.9x in the next five years, and our Energy Opportunities Fund is positioned to unlock profitable investment opportunities arising from this transition."

  • Sanjay Chawla, CIO – Equity and Fund Manager, highlighted the strength of the energy theme: "Energy constitutes a significant portion of the Nifty 500 index and offers superior earnings growth and dividend yield compared to the broader market. This fund provides exposure to traditional and new energy segments, enabling investors to benefit from structural changes in the sector."

Features of the Fund

  1. Thematic Exposure: At least 80 per cent of assets will be allocated to companies across the traditional and new energy value chain, including exploration, production, distribution, and renewable energy transitions.
  2. Comprehensive Energy Coverage: The portfolio will include investments in coal, crude oil, gas, nuclear, solar, wind, hydro, geothermal, and hydrogen.
  3. Market Cap Flexibility: The fund will invest across market capitalizations to capture diverse growth opportunities.
  4. Long-Term Focus: Suitable for equity investors with a minimum investment horizon of three years.

Historical Performance of the Energy Theme
Research by Baroda BNP Paribas AMC shows that the Nifty Energy Total Return Index (TRI) has consistently outperformed the Nifty 500 TRI over 3, 5, 7, and 10-year periods ending December 31, 2024. This track record underscores the potential of the energy sector to deliver superior long-term returns.

Government Initiatives Supporting Growth
India’s energy transition is bolstered by government policies such as:

  • PLI Scheme for high-efficiency solar modules.
  • National Green Hydrogen Mission for sustainable energy production.
  • Viability Gap Funding for battery storage systems.
  • Plans to invite bids for 50 GW of renewable energy capacity annually between FY24–28.
