On the day of weekly expiry, Nifty 50 began flat at 16,994.65, compared to its previous closing of 16,972.15. This was due to mixed global signals. On Wednesday, leading Wall Street indices finished mixed as investors raced to the relative safety of the US Treasury market.

Until a rally was sparked by rumours that Swiss regulators could support the bank, Credit Suisse led a selloff in US and European banking shares. It's expected that Credit Suisse will borrow USD 54 billion from the Swiss National Bank.

In overnight trade, Nasdaq Composite rose 0.05 per cent, Dow Jones Industrial Average dropped 0.87 per cent, and S&P 500 lost 0.7 per cent. Nonetheless, at the time of writing, their respective futures were trading in the green. Following the overnight signals from Wall Street, Asian market indices were mainly trading lower on Thursday. Except for Australia's S&P ASX 200, all other indices were trading in the red.

The advance-decline ratio on the BSE was unfavourable, with 1127 stocks rising, 2091 falling, and 121 staying unchanged. Except for metals, IT and realty, all other sectors were trading in the green.
