The Federal Reserve meeting revealed that interest rate hikes will shortly be slowed down, helping to boost Wall Street indices overnight. In response to a sharp drop in the crude oil prices and strength in domestic markets, the rupee strengthened against the US dollar.
The highest gains were observed in oil & gas and technology stocks as Indian headline indices opened the session higher. With gains of around 1 per cent and led by Indian Oil Corporation and Bharat Petroleum Corporation, BSE Oil & Gas were the top gaining sectors amid a decline in crude oil prices globally.
At 12:15 pm, the BSE Sensex gained 0.63 per cent, reaching a level of 61,896. The Nifty 50 index rose 0.65 per cent to the 18,385 level. On the Sensex, Power Grid Corporation of India, HCL Technologies and HDFC Bank were the Top Gainers, whereas Kotak Mahindra Bank, Bharti Airtel and Bajaj Finserv were the Top Losers.
