Shares of Sharda Cropchem, the top BSE Smallcap gainer, soared almost 10 per cent, keeping small-cap bulls active.
Indian headline indices started the session lower, mirroring the deterioration in Asian markets and were driven lower mainly by real estate and power stocks. In the closing rally, most indices recovered, with BSE Oil & Gas, BSE Metals and BSE Energy emerging as the top performing sectors with gains of over 1 per cent each.
With 1,872 shares rising and 1,607 falling on the BSE, the advance-decline ratio remained in favour of advances, while broader indices underperformed main indices, with the BSE Midcap index ending the session marginally lower.

At 3:30 pm, the BSE Sensex surged 0.37 per cent, reaching a level of 61,133. The Nifty 50 index added 0.38 per cent to the 18,191 level. On the Sensex, Bharti Airtel, State Bank of India and Tata Steel were the Top Gainers, whereas Tata Motors, Titan and UltraTech Cement Company were the Top Losers.
