Sensex, Nifty slip, HDFC twins & ICICI Bank biggest contributors to Sensex fall, Coal India shines
On the last day of the week, both the Sensex and Nifty tumbled pushing the key benchmark indices down by 1.13 per cent and 1.05 per cent respectively. Therefore the Sensex closed at 37877 levels down by 433 points and Nifty closed at 11181 levels down by 118.6 points.
The European markets were also unanimously down with FTSE sliding by 2.18 per cent, DAX slipping by 1.30 per cent and CAC 40 falling by 2.12 per cent. Fresh quarantine rules along with a record drop in second-quarter employment led to fresh selling in Europe. The treasury yields declined after rising for five days.
However, the Asian markets were mixed with Nikkei trading up by 0.17 per cent and Shanghai inching up by 1.19 per cent. Hang Seng and Kospi slipped by 0.19 per cent and 1.23 per cent respectively.
The biggest Sensex gainer in today’s trade was Sun Pharma up by 2.04 per cent, NTPC gaining 1.38 per cent, Tata Steel inching up by 1.26 per cent, Infosys rising by 0.24 per cent and Titan adding 0.43 per cent to its yesterday’s close.
The banks were the biggest losers in today’s trade with Axis Bank going down by 2.81 per cent, M&M sliding by 2.60 per cent, SBI slipping by 2.68 per cent, HDFC Bank falling by 2.31 per cent and Bajaj Finance tumbling by 2.57 per cent.
The BSE Mid-Cap index was down by 1.02 per cent. Shriram City Union Finance was the top Mid-Cap gainer, up by more than 9 per cent followed by PNB Housing and JSW Energy with both Mid-Cap stocks gaining more than 3 per cent each.
The BSE Small-Cap index was down by 0.85 per cent. Vascon Engineers was the top Small-Cap gainer, up by nearly 20 per cent followed by Redington India, up by 16.10 per cent and Bharat Bijlee, up by more than 16.02 per cent.
All the BSE sectoral indices were in red except the BSE Metal index which was up by 0.20 per cent, BSE Healthcare Index and BSE Consumer durable index were up by 0.75 per cent and 0.06 per cent respectively.
The BSE Auto index was down by 2.50 per cent and BSE Bankex slipped by 2.18 per cent and BSE Oil & Gas was down by 1.39 per cent even as BSE telecom fell little over 1 per cent. The BSE IT index was down by 0.37 per cent while the BSE FMCG index slipped 1.38 per cent.
