Sensex, Nifty gain; Aditya Birla Fashion zooms 8 per cent, Jubilant FoodWorks jumps 4 per cent despite posting net loss

On Wednesday, Sensex gained by 185.23 points or by 0.48 per cent to close at 39,086.03 while Nifty rose by 64.75 points or 0.56 per cent to settle at 11,535.

Mercom Capital Group, a clean energy communications & consulting firm, has ranked Adani Green Energy as the largest solar power generation company in the world. Adani Green’s solar portfolio stands at 12.32 gigawatts, which exceeded the total installed capacity of the US in 2019. Reacting to the news, the shares of the company locked in at its upper circuit of 10 per cent at Rs 546.

Not only did media stocks gain but also metal stocks also experienced positive momentum in the hopes of recovery of metal demand.

Jubilant FoodWorks, the company that operates Domino’s Pizza and Dunkin’ Donuts chain in India, reported a consolidated loss of Rs 73.89 crore for Q1FY21 while the net profit gained was of Rs 71.64 crore during the same quarter of FY20.

On Wednesday, Indian Rupee ended slightly lower at Rs 73.03 against the US dollar as compared to Tuesday's close of Rs 72.87. The yield on the 10-year government bond ended at 5.919 per cent as compared to the previous close of 5.942 per cent.

The top Sensex gainers include Mahindra & Mahindra that went up by 5.77 per cent, Power Grid rose by 3.21 per cent, Tata Steel gained by 2.30 per cent, IndusInd Bank increased by 2.08 per cent, RIL gained by 1.97 per cent, HCL Technologies rose by 1.67 per cent, etc.

Sensex losers consisted of Bajaj Auto, which declined by 2.62 per cent, Asian Paints fell by 1.63 per cent, Sun Pharmaceutical Industries decreased by 1.48 per cent, HDFC fell by 1.25 per cent, Nestle India plunged by 1.12 per cent, NTPC decreased by 0.95 per cent, etc.

Amongst sectoral indices on BSE, the Energy index gained by 1.80 per cent while other indices such as Power and Metal rose by 1.60 per cent and 1.49 per cent, respectively. BSE Telecom index and BSE IT index inched up by 1.34 per cent and 1.14 per cent, respectively. BSE FMCG index gained by a mere 0.07 per cent whereas, BSE healthcare index was up by 0.78 per cent.

Broader markets outperformed the domestic benchmark indices as BSE Small-Cap index climbed up by 1.66 per cent and BSE Mid-Cap index jumped by 1.26 per cent. BSE Small-Cap index gainers include Indiamart Intermesh, Techno Electric & Engineering Company, Punjab Chemicals & Crop Protection, RPG Life Sciences, Mangalam Organics, etc. BSE Mid-Cap index gainers included United Breweries, Aditya Birla Fashion, and Retail, JSW Energy, Info Edge (India) Ltd, etc.
