Sensex gains by more than 600 points; RIL at all-time high, Parag Milk Foods jumps over 8 per cent
Snapping a two-day losing streak, the domestic benchmark indices ended Thursday’s trading session in the green, boosted by gains in heavyweights. Sensex rose by 1.69 per cent or 646.60 points to settle at 38,840.32 while Nifty gained by 171.25 points or 1.52 per cent to close at 11,449.25.
Tracking global cues, Sensex and Nifty also traded in positive territory as the US stocks reversed course from a three-day losing streak thus, leading the tech-heavy Nasdaq into correction territory.
According to media reports, Reliance Industries (RIL) is offering to sell around USD 20 billion stakes in its retail business to Amazon. The company’s shares were buzzing on BSE as the stock gained by more than 7 per cent in a day, which is the highest single-day gain in the last 5 months. The stock of RIL also made a fresh lifetime high of Rs 2,343.90 per share on BSE.
On the global front, Shanghai index and Hang Seng fell by 0.61 per cent and 0.64 per cent, respectively, whereas Nikkei and KOSPI gained by 0.88 per cent and 0.87 per cent, respectively. European indices such as FTSE 100 was trading down by 0.63 per cent while DAX was seen trading in the green, up by 0.41 per cent. On the contrary, CAC 40 was trading flat with a negative bias, down by 0.011 per cent.
The rupee ends at 73.46 per US dollar against Wednesday’s close of 73.53 per US dollar.
Sensex gainers consisted of RIL that went up by 7.10 per cent, Asian Paints increased by 4.15 per cent, Axis Bank gained by 3.71 per cent, UltraTech Cement rose by 2.79 per cent, IndusInd Bank soared by 2.49 per cent, Bajaj Finance gained by 2.06 per cent, etc.
Sensex losers included Tata Steel, which went down by 2.24 per cent, Bharti Airtel decreased by 1.19 per cent, Kotak Mahindra Bank fell by 0.48 per cent, HDFC Bank plunged by 0.47 per cent, Titan Company slumped 0.38 per cent, Sun Pharmaceutical Industries declined by 0.35 per cent, etc.
Amongst sectoral indices on BSE, the Energy index was the biggest gainer that surged by 6.26 per cent while BSE Oil & Gas index gained by 3.59 per cent. BSE Telecom index was the biggest loser, which declined by 1.42 per cent. Meanwhile, BSE Metal index fell by 0.87 per cent and BSE Consumer Durables index decreased by 0.03 per cent.
Considering the broader markets, BSE Mid-Cap index rose by 0.92 per cent while BSE Small-Cap index gained by 1.27 per cent.
