Engineering New Frontiers: IIT Kharagpur and ORSL Collaborate on Waste-to-Energy and Catalytic Technology Research
The company has a market cap of Rs 218 crore and the stock is up by 35.4 per cent from its 52-week low of Rs 209 per share.
IIT Kharagpur (IITKGP) and Organic Recycling Systems Ltd. (ORSL) have embarked on a strategic partnership formalised through a Memorandum of Understanding. This collaboration signifies a concerted effort to bolster research and innovation within the critical areas of clean energy, carbon utilisation, and the circular economy at the premier institute. By uniting IITKGP's deep-seated research capabilities with ORSL's industry insight and practical experience in sustainable waste management and bioenergy solutions, this alliance aims to unlock new frontiers in environmentally responsible technologies. The agreement outlines a robust framework for joint research projects, skill development, technology transfer, and the commercialisation of cutting-edge solutions.
A primary focus of this joint venture is the development of innovative catalysts for the conversion of carbon dioxide into valuable products, specifically targeting CO₂ methanation and its transformation into mixed alcohols. Complementary efforts will explore advanced techniques for methane cracking and reforming, utilising both experimental and computational approaches, with the integration of machine learning to expedite catalyst discovery and optimise carbon utilisation processes. In the realm of bioenergy, the collaboration seeks to enhance the production of BioCNG, bioethanol, and biohydrogen, alongside investigating catalysis for the conversion of waste into renewable dimethyl ether (rDME).

Beyond energy production, the MoU also emphasises the valorisation of biochar-enriched digestate for soil amendment and catalytic applications. Advanced reactor design and process modelling will be a key area of focus, incorporating kinetic modelling and artificial intelligence/machine learning to optimise processes and enable predictive design. Furthermore, the partnership includes collaborative work in analytical and characterisation studies, the development of biomass-based activated carbon for purification, and a strong emphasis on human resource development through exchanges, training programs, and joint commercialisation initiatives.
