On Thursday, the frontline indices ended with minor losses due to negative global cues. Oil and gas, pharmaceutical, and healthcare stocks were in high demand. Meanwhile, IT and bank stocks fell. The S&P BSE Sensex, the barometer index, fell 98 points, or 0.18 per cent, to 53,416.15. The Nifty 50 dropped 28 points, or 0.18 per cent, to 15,938.65. In four consecutive sessions, the Sensex fell 1.96 per cent and the Nifty fell 1.74 per cent. The S&P BSE Mid-Cap index lost 0.40 per cent, while the S&P BSE Small-Cap index dipped by 0.56 per cent in the broader market.
The breadth of the market was negative. On the BSE, 1,382 shares rose while 1,940 fell and 140 shares remained unchanged. Domestic equities mirrored weak global equities after consumer inflation in the United States reached a four-decade high of 9.1 per cent in June, putting pressure on the Federal Reserve to adopt a more aggressive monetary policy to cool the red-hot inflation. In India, the wholesale price index (WPI) inflation rate was 15.18 per cent in June 2022, up from 12.07 per cent in June 2021. The yield on India's 10-year benchmark federal paper increased to 7.384 from 7.337 at the previous trading session's close.
The rupee was weaker against the dollar in the foreign exchange market. The rupee was trading at 79.92, up from 79.81 at the close of the previous trading session. Gold futures on the MCX for the 5 August 2022 settlement fell 0.90 per cent to Rs 50,347. Brent crude for September 2022 settlement fell USD 2.15, or 2.16 per cent, to $97.42 per barrel in the commodities market.
