Closing bell: Sensex plunges 1,416 points, Nifty tumbles 430 points
All the stocks in the information technology, metals, and media sectors fell.
On Thursday, the equity indices fell due to negative global indicators. All the sectoral indices of NSE ended in the red. All the stocks in the information technology, metals, and media sectors fell. Nifty closed just beyond 15,800 points. Due to the expiry of the weekly index options on NSE, trading was choppy. Nifty’s Information Technology index fell 5.74 per cent to 28,352.15. In just two trading sessions, the index has dropped 6.18 per cent. On Thursday, the European and Asian stock markets also fell. Futures on Dow Jones index were down by 423 points, signalling a bad start in the US stocks today.
BSE Sensex closed in red after the bloodbath today, plummeting 1,416 points to close at 52,792 levels. BSE Midcap index too skid by 602 points to end the day at 22,069 levels. Likewise, BSE Smallcap index dropped 603 points to close at 25,801 levels. The top stocks on BSE Sensex today were ITC, Power Grid Corporation of India, and Dr Reddy’s Laboratories. However, the Top Losers were HCL Technologies, Infosys, Tata Steel, Kotak Mahindra Bank, and Mahindra & Mahindra.
Nifty 50 ended at 15,809 levels, declining by 430 points only. Similarly, Bank Nifty slipped 848 points and closed the day at 33,315 levels. The top gaining stocks were ITC, Dr Reddy’s Laboratories, and Power Grid Corporation of India. On the other hand, the stocks of Wipro, Infosys, HCL Technologies, TCS, and Tech Mahindra closed negative today.
The total stocks traded today were 3,447, out of which, 857 advanced and 2,469 stocks declined. There were 121 stocks that were unchanged. The number of stocks that were locked in the upper circuit was 221 while 285 stocks hit their lower circuits today. The number of stocks that hit a new 52-week high is 49 while 87 stocks made a fresh 52-week low today.
