Closing Bell: Nifty closes below 17,700, Sensex drops 480 points; IT equities lag, power stocks rise

The Indian markets, mirroring the weakness in their global peers, closed in red on Monday.

The Indian markets, mirroring the weakness in their global peers, closed in red on Monday. Veranda Learning Solutions closed at Rs 164.80 on BSE, at a premium of 20.29 per cent compared with the issue price of Rs 137. SMS Lifesciences jumped 11.03 per cent to Rs 876.95. NSE's India VIX, a gauge of market volatility, moved up by 3.29 per cent to 18.27 levels. Meanwhile, the European markets mostly edged lower on Monday.  

  

BSE Sensex slipped into the red zone by 482 points to 58,964 points. On the flip side, Sensex Midcap index gained 103 points to end the day at 25,407. In the same way, BSE Smallcap index increased 114 points to close at 29,880 levels. ICICI Bank, NTPC, TCS, Nestle India, and Maruti Suzuki were the Top Gainers on BSE Sensex today. On the other hand, HDFC Bank, HDFC, Asian Paints, Wipro, and HCL Technologies were the top losers today.  

  

Nifty ended below 17,700 levels at 17,674, dipping by 109 points. Bank Nifty also declined 138 points and closed the day at 37,613. The top gaining stocks were Grasim Industries, JSW Steel, Cipla, Apollo Hospitals, and Adani Ports. The stocks losing the most were Larsen & Toubro, Infosys, Wipro, SBI Life Insurance, and HCL Technologies.  

  

The total stocks traded today were 3,685, out of which, 2,100 advanced and 1,457 stocks declined. There were 128 stocks that were unchanged. The number of stocks that were locked in the upper circuit was 471 while 142 stocks got locked in their lower circuits today. The number of stocks that have made a fresh 52-week high is 263 while 14 stocks made a new 52-week low today.
