Closing Bell: Markets regain lost levels; realty, auto and power stocks become major gainers

On Tuesday, the headline equity indices i.e. Sensex and Nifty ended on a higher note by regaining their lost levels of Monday.

The US and European markets are also trading higher by almost a per cent each whereas the Shanghai exchange is trading lower amidst weak earnings reports and the severe lockdown that has been imposed in China to contain the outbreak of rising cases.  

At market close, BSE Sensex was at 57,356.61, up by 776.72 points or 1.37 per cent. BSE Midcap index also ended at 24,630.25, up 391.57 points or 1.62 per cent.  BSE Smallcap index closed at 28,918.83 levels, higher by 0.76 per cent.  

The Top Gainers on BSE Sensex today were Power Grid Corporation of India, Titan Company, Mahindra & Mahindra, IndusInd Bank, and Bajaj Finance. On the other hand, the stocks of Axis Bank, Asian Paints, Maruti Suzuki, and TCS turned out to be the Top Losers.    

On the other hand, Nifty 50 surged 246.85 points or 1.46 per cent and closed at 17,200.80, reclaiming the 17,000-mark. Likewise, Nifty Midcap 100 and Nifty Smallcap 100 were also up by 1.62 per cent & 1.17 per cent, respectively. The top gaining stocks on Nifty 50 were Adani Ports & SEZ, Bajaj Auto, Hero MotoCorp, Mahindra & Mahindra, and Power Grid Corporation of India. The stocks losing the most were ONGC, Apollo Hospitals, Axis Bank, Hindalco Industries, and Asian Paints.  

The total stocks traded today were 3,502, out of which, 1,996 advanced while 1,296 stocks declined. There were 129 stocks that were unchanged. The number of stocks that were locked in the upper circuit was nine while only one stock got closed in the lower circuit today. Around 154 stocks touched a fresh 52-week high while 24 stocks hit a new 52-week low today.  

All the sectors ended in the green today with energy, oil & gas, realty, power, auto, and utilities, leading the broader indices higher by 2 per cent to 3 per cent each.
