Closing Bell: Bloodbath on the bourses as global markets extended their losses!

On the sectoral front, only the private bank sector was trading slightly on the higher side whereas the rest of the sectors were down by more than 2 per cent to 3 per cent each.

At the time of market closing, the core equity indices i.e. Sensex and Nifty 50 were seen extending their losses even further today. The falling global markets, due to earnings session and rising bond yields, coupled with a 3 per cent drop in crude oil prices, witnessed a heavy sell-off on Wall Street.  

Chinese Shenzhen Stock Exchange fell by over 6 per cent, owing to a spurt in the COVID-19 cases as well as the government’s struggle to contain the outbreak of the same.     

At market close, BSE Sensex fell 1.08 per cent and was at 56,579.89, giving up the 57,000-level mark. BSE Midcap index also ended at 23,370.50, down by 459.69 points or 1.86 per cent.  BSE Smallcap index closed at 28.699.35 levels, lower by 1.88 per cent.   

The Top Gainers on BSE Sensex today were HDFC Bank, ICICI Bank, HDFC, Kotak Mahindra Bank, and Nestle India. On the other hand, the stocks of Tata Steel, Tech Mahindra, NTPC, Titan Company, and Reliance Industries turned out to be the Top Losers.    

The shares of ICICI Bank rose by almost 2 per cent after the bank posted a robust earnings report for Q4FY22.    

On the other hand, Nifty 50 dived 218 points or 1.27 per cent and closed at the 16,953.95 mark. Likewise, Nifty Midcap 100 and Nifty Smallcap 100 were also down by 1.92 per cent & 2.42 per cent, respectively. The top gaining stocks on Nifty 50 were Bajaj Auto, HDFC Bank, HDFC, ICICI Bank, and Maruti Suzuki. The stocks losing the most were Coal India, BPCL, Tata Steel, SBI Life Insurance Company, Hindalco Industries, and Tata Motors. 

The total stocks traded today were 3,674, out of which 1,037 advanced while 2,494 stocks declined. There were 143 stocks that were unchanged. The number of stocks that were locked in the upper circuit was eight while only four stocks closed in the lower circuit today. Around 177 stocks touched a fresh 52-week high while 23 stocks hit a new 52-week low today.
