Closing bell: Benchmark indices close with exciting gains on the first day of financial year

All the sectors on BSE and NSE closed positively on the first day of the financial year 2023. NSE's India VIX, a gauge of market volatility, went up by 4.86 per cent to 20.27 levels.
BSE Sensex closed today with strong gains of 708 points at 59,276 levels. Also, Sensex MidCap index has increased 335 points and ended the day at 24,443 levels. Likewise, BSE SmallCap went up to the level of 28,699, up by 483 points. On BSE Sensex today, the top stocks were NTPC, Power Grid Corporation of India, Induslnd Bank, State Bank of India, and HDFC. On the other hand, the top losers were Tech Mahindra, Titan, Dr Reddy’s Laboratories, Sun Pharmaceuticals, and Infosys.
Following the cues, Nifty 50 index also halted at 17,670, winning by 205 points. Bank Nifty too jumped 774 points and ended the day at 37,148. The top winning stocks were NTPC, BPCL, Power Grid Corporation of India, Induslnd Bank, and HDFC. The major losing stocks were Hero MotoCorp, Tech Mahindra, Divi’s Laboratories, SBI Life Insurance, and Dr Reddy’s Laboratories.
The total stocks traded today were 3,501, out of which, 2,726 advanced and 669 stocks declined. There were 106 stocks that were unchanged. The number of stocks that were locked in the upper circuit was 549 while 128 stocks got locked in their lower circuit. Around 133 stocks made a new 52-week high today while 21 stocks have hit their 52-week lows.
