Closing Bell: Barometers trade below the flat line, Nifty slips below 16,200

During mid-afternoon trade, the domestic equities came close to a flat line, shrinking major cuts. All sectors closed in the red with the exception of finance, bankex, oil & gas, and realty. On Wednesday, the European stocks were up across the board while Asian markets were mainly up. In Europe, German inflation hit 7.4 per cent in April, the highest level since 1981.
BSE Sensex closed in the red, losing on the fourth day by 276 points to end at 54,088 levels. BSE Midcap index also fell by 101 points to end the day at 22,140 levels. BSE Smallcap index too dropped 582 points to close at 25,495 levels. The top stocks on BSE Sensex today were Axis Bank, Induslnd Bank, HDFC Bank, Kotak Mahindra Bank, and State Bank of India. However, stocks that witnessed a fall in their price include Larsen & Toubro, Bajaj Finserv, Bajaj Finance, NTPC, Infosys, and Maruti Suzuki.
Nifty 50 ended at 16,167 levels, sliding only by 72 points. On the contrary, Bank Nifty ended with a gain of 210 points and closed the day at 34,693 levels. The top gaining stocks were ONGC, Axis Bank, Induslnd Bank, Cipla, and HDFC. The top losing stocks were Shree Cement, Bajaj Finserv, Larsen & Toubro, NTPC, and BPCL.
The total stocks traded today were 3,514, out of which, 821 advanced and 2,574 stocks declined. There were 119 stocks that were unchanged. The number of stocks that were locked in the upper circuit was 140 while 453 stocks hit their lower circuits today. The number of stocks that made a new 52-week high is 51 while 274 stocks hit a fresh 52-week low today.
