Closing Bell: Barometers fall under severe selling pressure, Nifty closes below 16,600

In the final hour of the trading, there was a lot of selling. All of NSE's sectoral indices ended in the red with the exception of IT and oil & gas.

On Friday, the domestic equity indices reversed intraday gains and ended the day with minor losses. In the final hour of the trading, there was a lot of selling. All of NSE's sectoral indices ended in the red with the exception of IT and oil & gas. After touching the day's high of 16,793 in the early trade, Nifty fell below the 16,600 mark. Besides, Dow Jones futures were down by 73 points, signalling that the US stock market would open lower today. On Friday, the European markets were neutral.  

  

BSE Sensex closed at 55,769 levels, sinking by 48 points. Similarly, BSE Midcap index plummeted 336 points to end the day at 22,774 levels. Likewise, BSE Smallcap index fell by 310 points to close at 26,384 levels. The top stocks on BSE Sensex today were Reliance Industries, Infosys, Larsen & Toubro, TCS, and Hindustan Unilever. However, the Top Losers were NTPC, Axis Bank, Bajaj Finserv, Induslnd Bank, Tata Steel, and UltraTech Cement.  

  

Nifty 50 ended on a negative note on the second day at 16,584 levels with a loss of 43 points. Similarly, Bank Nifty plunged 338 points and closed the day at 35,275 levels. The top gaining stocks were Reliance Industries, Infosys, Larsen & Toubro, Sun Pharmaceutical, and HCL Technologies. The top losing stocks today were Grasim Industries, UltraTech Cement, Shree Cement, Hero MotoCorp, and Maruti Suzuki.  

  

The total stocks traded today were 3,466, out of which, 1,382 advanced and 1,951 stocks declined. There were 133 stocks that were unchanged. The number of stocks that were locked in the upper circuit was 257 while the number of stocks that closed in the lower circuit today was 163. Around 69 stocks made a new 52-week high while there were 41 stocks that made a fresh 52-week low today.
