Closing Bell: After a sloppy Wednesday, markets make a comeback! FMCG, Power, and Bankex outperform

On Thursday, the equity indices completed a turbulent trading session with significant gains.

On Thursday, the equity indices completed a turbulent trading session with significant gains. Hindustan Unilever rose 4.33 per cent to Rs 2,237 after reporting an 8.59 per cent increase in revenue. Coromandel International climbed 6.86 per cent after reporting an 85.94 per cent increase in the consolidated net profit. The stock of Chennai Petroleum Corporation Ltd (CCPL) jumped 6.43 per cent after the refining firm reported a 329 per cent increase in its net profit. Indian Hotels Company surged 4.83 per cent to Rs 247.25 after registering a consolidated net profit of Rs 57.93 crore for the fourth quarter. Persistent Systems soared 5.1 per cent after reporting a 13.9 per cent increase in its consolidated net profit.  

  

BSE Sensex closed on the higher side, gaining 701 points to end at 57,521 mark. Sensex Midcap index also shot up by 203 points to end the day at 24,616 level. BSE Smallcap index inched higher by 35 points to close at 28,778 level. The top stocks on BSE Sensex today were Hindustan Unilever, Asian Paints, NTPC, Power Grid Corporation of India, and Larsen & Toubro. However, stocks that witnessed price falls were Bharti Airtel, Mahindra & Mahindra, HCL Technologies, and HDFC Bank.  

   

Nifty 50 jumped 206 points and closed at 17,245 levels. Likewise, Bank Nifty climbed 393 points and closed the day at 36,422 levels. The top gaining stocks were HDFC Life Insurance, Hindustan Unilever, SBI Life Insurance, UPL, and Asian Paints. The stocks losing the most were Bajaj Auto, Bharti Airtel, Hindalco Industries, Mahindra & Mahindra, and HDFC Bank.  

  

The total stocks traded today were 3,518, out of which, 1,652 advanced and 1,757 stocks declined. There were 109 stocks that were unchanged. The number of stocks that were locked in the upper circuit was 250 while 217 stocks closed in the lower circuit today. The number of stocks that have made a new 52-week high is 149 while 19 stocks hit a fresh 52-week low today. On Thursday, the European stocks rose while the Asian markets closed higher.
