The leading equity indices posted substantial gains in the early trading as markets saw robust buying in index criticals. After 14 weeks, the Nifty 50 is trading over the 17,000 mark.
Except for pharmaceuticals and PSU banks, all sectors had significant demand, with metals, IT, and automobiles leading the way. The Nifty 50 was trading at 17,067.80 at the time of writing, up 138.15 points (0.82 per cent).
Broader market indices, on the other hand, were outperforming the frontline indices, with the Nifty Mid-Cap Index up 0.93 per cent and Nifty Small-Cap Index up 0.91 per cent, respectively. The market breadth was robust, with 1,998 stocks rising, 1,051 falling, and 143 remaining unchanged.
Asian markets were neutral on Thursday, after the US Federal Reserve's announcement on rate rise and Wall Street's bounce. This came as the United States reported negative GDP, implying that the Fed would be less proactive in tightening policy.
