Air passenger traffic growth slows down in March

International Air Transport Association (IATA), global airlines body, has said that the growth of India's domestic passenger market dropped to 3.1 per cent in March 2019 as compared to 8.3 per cent in February. One of the key airline players, Jet Airways has stopped its operations which led to a slowdown in India’s domestic passenger market. In addition to this, construction work in India’s key Airport, i.e. Mumbai added to the pain.

According to DGCA India, passengers carried by domestic airlines during Jan-Mar 2019 were 354.53 lakhs. Global airlines body further added rising airfares in recent months are also likely to have weighed upon passenger demand.

Besides, the IATA represents around 290 airlines comprising 82 per cent of global air traffic. The domestic passenger traffic in countries across the world increased by 4.1 per cent in March. The shut down of Jet Airways has led to market share gains for other airlines such as Indigo, Go Air, etc. which is seen in the below-mentioned table.
