Women fund manager at par with their peers in performance
Fund management is a place where women are grossly under-represented in India especially when it comes to equity fund management. According to data analysed by us on March 8, 2018 there are only nine women equity open-ended fund managers including primary and secondary fund managers. Most of the fund houses do not have any equity women fund managers. There are only handful of AMCs where women are adequately represented.
Even in case, we include the entire fund industry, women are still under-represented. According to a study done by Morningstar India, the number of women in fund management is up from last year, but they still constitute only eight percent of the industry and cumulatively manage assets worth about Rs 3.2 lakh crore, a figure that translates to 15 percent of the total assets under management for open-ended funds.
When we analyse the performance of open-ended equity fund, managed by women fund managers there is a mixed bag. Almost 50% of the women fund managers have been able to beat their peers and benchmark. However, when it comes to the number of funds and asset under management, they have underperformed their peers.
