Indices traded lower with sharp losses in the morning session as investors watched Russia's military operation in Ukraine. The Nifty traded below the 17,600 mark. The sectoral indices on the BSE and NSE are trading downwards with auto banks and IT stocks losing the most.
Trading took a hit after Russian President Vladimir Putin announced in a public address that he had authorized a military operation in Ukraine. Later the media reported explosions were heard near the capital of Kyiv. The crude oil and gold prices also soared after military action in Eastern Ukraine. A sell-off was seen by the FII of Rs 3417.16 crore and buying by DII of Rs 3024.37 crore was recorded.
The BSE Sensex index plunged by 1533 points after opening in and is trading at a level of 56,698.59. BSE MidCap has tumbled by 782 points and is trading at 22,776.30 points. The only gaining stock today is Oil India up by 1.41 per cent on this index. BSE SmallCap also fell today by 926 points and is trading at 26,019.73. The Nifty 50 index is trading at the 16,611.95 mark, dropping by 451 points. The top gaining stocks are Hindalco Industries and ONGC. The stocks in red today are Induslnd Bank, Tata Motors, Hero Motocorp, Grasim Industries, and Adani Ports, falling more than 4.3 per cent each.
