India's commitment to solar energy has been further emphasized in the Union Budget 2025, with a Rs 1,500 crore allocation to the solar power grid segment.

India's commitment to solar energy has been further emphasized in the Union Budget 2025, with a Rs 1,500 crore allocation to the solar power grid segment. This follows a significant increase in funding in recent years, with over Rs 8,000 crore allocated in the previous fiscal year, a substantial jump from the Rs 4,757 crore revised estimate for FY23-24. This budgetary support reflects the government's focus on sustainable development and energy security.

The growth of India's solar power sector is evident in the increasing financial allocations. In 2022-23, the allocation reached a record Rs 3,304.03 crore, compared to Rs 2,369.13 crore in 2021-22 and ₹2,449.65 crore in 2020-21. This consistent increase in funding highlights the government's commitment to expanding solar power generation capacity and solidifying India's position as a leader in renewable energy. This financial commitment is coupled with numerous supporting schemes.

Several key schemes have been instrumental in driving India's solar power progress. These include the Solar Park Scheme, designed to create large-scale solar generation hubs; the Viability Gap Funding (VGF) scheme, which bridges the financial viability gap for solar projects; and the Central Public Sector Undertaking (CPSU) scheme, which involves public sector companies in solar project development. Other important initiatives include the Bundling Scheme, the Grid Connected Solar Rooftop Scheme, the Defence Scheme, and the innovative Canal Bank & Canal Top Scheme.

The 2025 budget also introduced a Clean Tech Manufacturing Mission to bolster domestic production of crucial components like solar PV cells, EV batteries, and wind turbines. Furthermore, it focuses on power sector reforms, incentivizing states to strengthen their transmission networks. A new Nuclear Energy Mission aims to develop at least 100 GW of nuclear energy by 2047, with Rs 20,000 crore allocated for Small Modular Reactors (SMRs). Tariff reductions on key renewable energy components, such as solar cells and modules, further aim to make clean energy more accessible and affordable.
