The major segments of the pharmaceutical industry include generic drugs, OTC medicines and API/bulk drugs, vaccines, contract research & manufacturing, biosimilars & biologics. 

The amount of FDI that entered the Indian pharmaceutical & drug industry between FY 2021 and FY 2022 was Rs 141.4 crore. 

The domestic market is anticipated to increase three times in the next ten years, according to the Indian Economic Survey 2021. The domestic pharmaceutical market in India, which was valued at Rs 4,200 crore in 2021, is anticipated to grow to Rs 6,500 crore by 2024 and then to Rs 12,000 crore–Rs 13,000 crore by 2030.  

Biopharmaceuticals, bioservices, bioagriculture, bioindustry, and bioinformatics are all part of India's biotechnology sector. In 2020, the Indian biotechnology market was estimated to be worth Rs 7,020 crore, and by 2025, it is anticipated to be worth Rs 15,000 crore. In FY20, the market for medical equipment in India was worth Rs 1,036 crore. From 2020 to 2025, the market is anticipated to grow at a CAGR of 37 per cent, reaching Rs 5,000 crore.  

As per Union Budget 2022-23, Rs 3,201 crore (US$ 419.2 million) has been set aside for research while Rs 83,000 crore (US$ 10.86 billion) for the Ministry of Health & Family Welfare. On the other hand, Rs 37,000 crore (US$ 4.83 billion) has been allocated to National Health Mission.  

BSE Healthcare sector has gained 4.25 per cent in the past one month compared to an 8.20 per cent rise by BSE Sensex. The sector, however, has underperformed by 11.08 per cent on a YTD basis compared to BSE Sensex, which fell by just 0.56 per cent.
