Following yesterday's carnage, markets took a pause and are now trading flat with little gains. Yesterday, markets saw a gap-down opening, with Nifty 50 closing 324.3 points (2 per cent) down at 15,774.4, with an intraday loss of roughly 3 per cent.
This came with lower-than-expected US inflation figures, which are approaching a 40-year high. India released its May retail inflation figure yesterday, which was lower than the prior month.
Retail inflation in India was 7.04 per cent in May 2022, down from 7.79 per cent in April 2022. Nonetheless, it is greater than the Reserve Bank of India's (RBI) desired inflation zone of 4 to 6 per cent.
Furthermore, even though the major US indices closed roughly 3 per cent to 4 per cent down, futures were trading with minor gains this morning, indicating a neutral opening for Indian markets.
Nifty 50 was up 12.4 points (0.08 per cent) at 15,786.8 at the time of writing. In terms of the broader markets, Nifty Mid-Cap and Nifty Small-Cap indices outpaced the headline indices, rising 0.43 per cent and 0.5 per cent, respectively.
Back in October 2021, Nifty 50 began its downward trend, which is currently ongoing. Although markets have been sliding, certain pockets have outperformed the market. This post will examine the top sectors that have outperformed the S&P BSE 500 index.
