Tata Motors to source BS-VI from Canada-based Westport Fuel

Automobile major, Tata Motors forged an alliance with Canada-based Westport Fuel Systems Inc to source Bharat Stage VI type engines for the company’s CNG-fueled trucks and buses.

The partnership will aid the development and supply for Tata Motors’ 4 and 6 cylinder natural gas spark-ignited commercial engine vehicles. Whereas, for the diesel range of vehicles, Tata Motors will be sourcing the BS-VI engines from Cummins.

Canada-based Westport Fuel Systems has been producing next generation natural gas spark-ignited engines to comply with BSE-VI emission standards under the following programme, since early last year.

Recently, Commerical vehicle major, Ashok Leyland had also signed an agreement with Japan-based Hino Motors for the development of BS-VI engine technology. In turn, the company will be supporting the development of Hino Motors’ engine parts purchasing in India for global operations. The company has begun the work on its BS-VI technology with a committed spending of Rs. 200-400 crore.

BS-VI standards are equivalent to the Euro-VI standards and are two steps ahead of BS-IV standards. The Supreme Court had banned the sale of BS-III compliant vehicles from April 1, 2017 onward, ordering that only the vehicles compliant with BS-VI standards must be sold in India.
