Shemaroo Entertainment launches a flagship Hindi channel

India's leading content powerhouse, Shemaroo Entertainment, announced that it is launching a new Hindi general entertainment channel (GEC)-Shemaroo TV, a free to air channel, targeting Hindi speaking markets of India.

Launching on May 1, 2020, Shemaroo TV will be available to audiences on all major DTH operators and cable networks. The channel will showcase a mix of originals and iconic shows, which will be consumed for the first time by a large set of free-to-air (FTA) audience.

Television broadcasting continues to remain the largest and most sustainable source of media consumption in India. As per industry sources, the Indian Television Industry is currently valued at Rs 787 billion in 2019 with advertising contributing to Rs 320 billion. Broadcasting is estimated to remain the largest and most-relevant segment in the media and entertainment space even after five years, on the back of a healthy growth rate. With close to 38 million free dish subscribers, FTA channels have seen robust growth in the viewership in recent times.

While the current times are unfortunate and challenging because of COVID-19 outbreak, there has been a significant spurt in consumption on media platforms during the lockdown. The launch would help the channel being sampled by a much larger set of audience and establish a good positioning in GEC space.

On Wednesday, the stock closed at Rs 85.85, up by 4.95 per cent or Rs 4.05 per share. The 52-week high is recorded at Rs 420.30 and the 52-week low is Rs 41.80 on BSE.
