Wall Street indices fell overnight as a result of weak investor sentiments and dismal earnings from Microsoft Corporation and Alphabet Inc. Despite Wall Street's weakness, SGX Nifty indicated a promising start for India's broader market. Following Asian market momentum, the Indian domestic indices started the session higher on Thursday.
All sectors were trading higher with BSE Metals leading the way with gains of about 3 per cent, driven by JSW Steel and Vedanta Limited. Stocks in the real estate, commodities, and utilities sectors gained significantly.
At 12.20 pm, BSE Sensex gained 0.20 per cent, reaching a level of 59,661. Nifty 50 index climbed 0.23 per cent to the 17,696 level. On Sensex, Tata Steel, Bharti Airtel, and Sun Pharmaceuticals were the Top Gainers while Bajaj Finance, Bajaj Finserv & Asian Paints were the Top Losers.
The shares of Bharat Bijlee, the top BSE Smallcap gainer, soared more than 12 per cent and traded at a new 52-week high with a 15-fold increase in the volume. The top low-priced gainers on BSE that drew investors' attention were Hemang Resources, Bhagyanagar India, and Nexus Surgical & Medicare.
